This overview will help you understand what you can expect when you apply for official on-campus housing at the University at Buffalo. We understand that applying for housing may be a new experience for you, so use this page to navigate the entire application process.
You can apply for on-campus housing after you have been admitted to UB. All applications are submitted on-line—you typically do not have to mail in anything unless we need documentation for special accommodations or other requests. For new and transfer students, fall housing is assigned on a first-come, first-served basis, which means the earlier you apply, the better your chances will be to get your preferred choice. Current UB students and all spring applicants self-select their housing.
You can apply for housing for:
Your application is considered complete when you submit your housing deposit (all students) and tuition deposit (first-year students only).
When you apply for housing, you will have the opportunity to self-select housing (returning students and all spring applicants) or share your preferences for what type of housing you want (new fall applicants). UB has residence halls (typically for first-year, second-year, and upperclass students) and apartments (typically for upperclass and graduate students, with a limited number for second-year students).
The application process is the same for apartments and residence halls—where you can live is determined by your high school (or equivalent) graduation date and other factors.
We also encourage students to learn about our Living Learning Communities. While we attempt to honor all housing preferences, a request for a specific housing area cannot be guaranteed.
All students who submit their complete housing application, including housing deposit (and, for new and transfer students, their tuition deposit) by the deadline are eligible for on-campus housing.
We will review your housing application based on your eligibility and your preferences. New and transfer students are assigned fall housing, while current UB students and spring applicants can self-select their housing. You will usually be notified via email when a decision has been made.
Even if you missed the application deadline, you can still apply for housing and be placed on our housing waitlist. Many students on the waitlist do receive on-campus housing, so we encourage you to apply even if the deadline has passed.

Cancellations for Fall applications are accepted for any reason through May 1 (June 1 for new international students). After that date only those no longer attending UB will be permitted to cancel their housing application; additional charges may apply.
