Dr. Suk Ki Hong Memorial Lecture Fund

The Department of Physiology and Biophysics hosts an annual lecture for the benefit of the scientific community of Western New York, supported by this fund.

For years, experts from the National Institute of Health, Harvard Medical School, Yale School of Medicine and other prestigious institutions have inspired students and faculty at UB through the Dr. Suk Ki Hong Memorial Lecture.

Established in memory of Suk Ki Hong, Distinguished Professor of Physiology and Biophysics, this fund is used to support scientific communications in the Department of Physiology and Biophysics, primarily through an annual lecture.

Dr. Hong’s scientific contributions (primarily in the areas of renal function and the physiology of diving) were highly regarded by his peers, and they continued without interruption for 35 years, earning him the Stover-Link Award from the Undersea Medical Society, UB's Stockton Kimball Prize, and numerous other awards.

Dr. Hong was tireless in his efforts to train his students and fellows and he inspired their sincere respect and true affection. An entire generation of physiologists has profited not only from his knowledge and high intellectual standards, but also from his honesty, enthusiasm, generous nature, and personal warmth.

    Almost a year to the day after the May 14 mass shooting in Buffalo, a group of 18 medical students gathered for lunch and conversation in the annex of the Hopewell Baptist Church on Fillmore Avenue. The students from the Jacobs School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences and the College of Human Medicine at Michigan State University were all familiar with the universal struggles that go along with attending medical school. But that wasn’t the only thing they had in common.
