UB Athletic Training Students Excelling on the Academic Field

Students in the Athletic Training (AT) graduate program in the Department of Exercise and Nutrition Sciences are proving to be academic athletes on state and national fields.

UB AT students received four of six yearly scholarships awarded this year by the New York State Athletic Trainers Association (NYSATA).

  • First-year student Brandon LuShing received the NYSATA Ed Abromonski Scholarship given to an athletic training student who exhibits strong charter and leadership skills.
  • Second-year student Victoria Parr received the NYSATA Scholarship for strong academic achievements.
  • Second-year student Marie Pettit received the NYSATA Memorial Scholarship, given to an athletic training student who excels in the classroom and promotes the athletic training profession within their community.
  • Second-year student Casey Webb received the NYSATA Diversity and Inclusion Academic Scholarship, given to a student promoting diversity within the Athletic Training community while pursuing a college degree in athletic training at a Commission on Accreditation of Athletic Training Education (CAATE) accredited college in New York.

Pettit also showed her prowess nationally, receiving

  • A scholarship from the Eastern Athletic Trainers’ Association for excelling academically and clinically.
  • The Richard E. Vandervoort Memorial Scholarship from the National Athletic Trainers’ Association (NATA) Research and Education Foundation is given to promising athletic training students.
  • The NATA District 2 Bobby Gunn Leadership Award for demonstrating leadership qualities. The award supports attendance at NATA’s annual meeting.

“We are so proud of our students for being recognized for their accomplishments,” said AT Program Director Ryan Krzyzanowicz, DAT, LAT, ATC. “Our program strives to give students opportunities to excel at the state and national levels, and these awards showcase that. These awards also prove that our program is the premier athletic training program in New York State and one of the best in the country.”
