First-generation students pursuing a degree at UB’s health sciences school receive scholarship support through this fund.

The Maureen R. L. Mussenden Scholarship fund provides scholarships to first-generation students (preferably women) pursuing a graduate degree at one of UB's health sciences schools, including the School of Dental Medicine, Jacobs School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences, School of Nursing, School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences, and the School of Public Health and Health Professions.

First-generation students (those whose parents did not receive a college degree) often face significant financial and logistical hurdles in pursuing their education; providing scholarship support can help them acheive their goals.

The fund is named in memory of Maureen R. L. Mussenden, who served as associate counsel in UB’s Academic Health Center. Shortly after she died in 2010 at age 54, after a courageous battle with cancer, her dear friend Kathie A. Keller established this fund as a tribute to her life and accomplishments, which included negotiating the landmark agreement between UB, Kaleida Health and Erie County Medical Center Corp. which continues to shape the delivery of health care in Western New York under the umbrella of the Great Lakes Health System.
