“The thigh gap is one aspect of an ever-evolving, socially constructed, idealized body image that is constructed and propagated through mass media and social media. Unrealistic and idealized images are not only for women; men assess their six-packs and the distribution of body hair (i.e., less on the body and more on the scalp). The idealized image would have little influence on us if it were not for self-objectification—the internalization of the misguided value, ‘I am only as good as I look.’”
