My Working Caregiver's Framework for Moving Forward

Silvia Johnston

The caregiving journey is messy, meaningful, and uniquely yours. To show up effectively in every role you carry — at work, at home, and within yourself — it starts with empathy, both for the people we support and for ourselves. Silvia Johnston, MBA '00, BA '98, shares a practical framework for making intentional decisions with less regret and more self-compassion, even when life refuses to slow down.

About Silvia Johnston
Silvia Johnston holds a BA in Interdisciplinary Social Sciences and an MBA from the University at Buffalo School of Management. She currently serves as an Adjunct Professor at UB's School of Management, where she teaches Performance Management Systems & Rewards. As the daughter of immigrants from Germany and Korea — both shaped by war and loss — Silvia was formed early by a deep sense of responsibility for others. That calling became lived experience when she stepped into the role of caregiver for her aging parents, managing their care remotely before welcoming her mother into her home for ten years — all while raising three children and working full time.
