Michael J. Holtz, MArch '74
Holtz is known nationally and internationally as a leader in architectural and energy research, development and sustainable design consulting. As project manager and director of energy programs at the American Institute of Architects (AIA) Research Corporation, he authored the first major U.S. publication on solar energy and housing design for the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development. Holtz established a broad-based building energy research program at the National Renewable Energy Laboratory, after which he founded and led Architectural Energy Corporation, a leading energy and environmental research, development and design consulting company. For 25 years, Holtz served as the operating agent on three International Energy Agency research projects on passive solar design and building energy analysis tools. In 2004, he co-founded LightLouver LLC, a daylighting and solar control products company. He helped establish, and served on the board of, the Home Energy Rating Systems Council and RESNET, which produced the HERS Index, the standard by which U.S. homes’ energy efficiency and performance are determined. Holtz has received numerous honors and awards for his contributions, including fellowships from the AIA and the American Solar Energy Society.
