Olli, a self-driving electric shuttle, demonstrated its capabilities at the Fourth Annual Symposium on Transportation Informatics, a two-day conference on UB’s North Campus that brought together nationwide leaders in next-generation transportation technologies in 2018.
UB researchers use Olli—as well as other vehicles and simulators—to conduct comprehensive testing of autonomous and connected vehicles. The goal is to inform decisions regarding policy, safety, reliability and other future transportation issues.
While UB has no current plans to transport students in the shuttle, researchers will examine the feasibility and benefits of doing so on UB campuses, including the downtown Buffalo Niagara Medical Campus.
The project was funded by a $4 million gift to UB by Stephen Still, BS ’76, who established an endowment to support the Stephen Still Institute for Sustainable Transportation and Logistics, a center that unites UB engineering and management schools to address the growing field of transportation, logistics and supply-chain management. The endowment helps fund research, program initiatives, equipment costs and the work of graduate students studying transportation.
