14 tech luminaries we lost in 2022

Computerworld and other IT publications worldwide published a story on top IT experts that the field lost in 2022 and included Sargur Srihari, SUNY Distinguished Professor in the Department of Computer Science and Engineering, who passed away in March.

The story reports that as founding director of the Center of Excellence for Document Analysis and Recognition, Srihari developed the mail sorting automation software for the U.S. Postal Service that is still in use today, sorting 95% of USPS mail with variations also in use in Australia and the United Kingdom.

Kemper Lewis, dean of the School of Engineering and Applied Sciences, was quoted, saying, “Hari cherished his role as a researcher, professor and scientist, and he will be deeply missed by his department, our school and our university.”
