'Wild West' of AI campaign warfare: DeSantis launches attack ad with fake Fauci image

Siwei Lyu, SUNY Empire Innovation Professor in the Department of Computer Science and Engineering, was quoted in USA Today about the use of artificial intelligence in political campaigns, including an attack ad from Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis. 

Lyu said it was the first time he saw such a format of fake photos being used alongside real ones, and that — mixed with it being a short section of a video — made it harder to discern the deepfakes.

“I don't know what exactly the intention they're using this, but the end result is the images look quite realistic," Lyu said.
