The scourge of passwords is almost over

Insider quoted Ziming Zhao, assistant professor in the Department of Computer Science and Engineering, about how many companies, such as Google and Mastercard, may begin to phase out passwords. 

The internet’s rising popularity created an immediate problem for online businesses as they could not verify a user’s identity. Zhao said text-based logins, or passwords, were the solution for online businesses to verify a user’s identity in the early days of the internet.

Despite some of their vulnerabilities, Zhao continues to advocate for passwords. 

They "do not completely eliminate security issues," Zhao said, “But they do raise the bar for hacking attempts, making them more difficult.”
