New Jersey Monitor quoted Siwei Lyu, SUNY Empire Innovation Professor in the Department of Computer Science and Engineering, in a story about a bill in the New Jersey State Legislature that would criminalize using deepfakes to aid identity thefts.
Lyu noted that synthetic videos, images, and audio technology has advanced rapidly alongside generative artificial intelligence that has made once-complicated tools increasingly available and accessible to the public.
“Back then, you didn’t have tools that were easy to use for end users. You need someone to know programming, AI systems, and you need a lot of computing power to be able to train the model and then create fake videos,” Lyu said. “Right now, there are tools available online where you can deepfake somebody’s face.”
