Fact check: Image of Costco gas pump screen blaming Biden is fabricated

USA Today quoted Siwei Lyu in an article on a fake image circulating online which appears to show the company Costco blaming President Joe Biden for high gas prices.

Lyu is an Empire Innovation Professor in the Department of Computer Science and Engineering who studies digital media forensics, including deepfakes and art authentication.

"You will notice some patterns showing up in the background of the LED screen as semi-regular grids," he said. "These patterns are known as the Moiré pattern, it is an artifact due to the mismatch between the camera sensor's pixel grid and the LED screen."
