Fact check: Altered image of crocodile in flooded home predates Hurricane Ian

A USA Today fact check story on an image of a crocodile in a flooded Florida home, an altered image that was widely circulated in the aftermath of Hurricane Ian, quotes deepfakes expert Siwei Lyu, Empire Innovation Professor of Computer Science and Engineering.

Lyu said there is a “high likelihood” the photo is altered. He believes it was edited with Photoshop. The legs of the chair have a wavy shape, which Lyu said indicates the ripples in the water were added to the image.
