Preserving African American History

Webinar, Feb. 7

Since its inception in 1999, the Uncrowned Queens Institute has developed a multi-faceted model that promotes community engagement in the documentation/ preservation of the historical/cultural assets of African-American regional history. The UQI model is unique and cutting-edge in the use of digital tools for the preservation of regional history and culture and for its focus on community builders, whose history has been ignored, overlooked, and largely undocumented.

Founders Dr. Peggy Brooks-Bertram, CEL '08, PhD '02, and Dr. Barbara Nevergold, PhD '86, EdM '74 host a retrospective of the organization’s growth and development and its accomplishments and contributions.

The first 20 Loyal Blues who register receive a complimentary copy of Go, Tell Michelle: African American Women Write to the New First Lady.

Slee Hall Performance, Feb. 9

As part of the Slee Hall Visiting Artist Series, composer, singer and visual artist Cécile McLorin Salvant performs at Lippes Concert Hall. She is a composer, singer, and visual artist. The late Jessye Norman described Salvant as“a unique voice supported by an intelligence and full-fledged musicality, which light up every note she sings”. Salvant has developed a passion for storytelling and finding the connections between vaudeville, blues, theater, jazz, baroque and folkloric music. Salvant is an eclectic curator, unearthing rarely recorded, forgotten songs with strong narratives, interesting power dynamics, unexpected twists, and humor.

Loyal Blues receive two tickets which include a private dessert reception before the show with Music Director Eric Hubner.
