COVID-19 Prevention: Campus Facilities

Together, we are stopping the spread

The health and safety of our campus community is UB’s priority and it’s up to each of us, individually, to practice health-conscious behaviors. UB has put the following protocols in place to protect your safety during the COVID-19 pandemic.

This guidance is subject to change and will be reviewed periodically to ensure compliance with guidance from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), New York State Department of Health (DOH), and World Health Organization (WHO).

Face Masks & PPE Social Distancing Cleaning & Disinfecting Handwashing Workplace Signage

UB will post directional and health promotion signage in high-traffic areas. This signage provides guidance to ensure safe social distance between individuals and to decrease density where possible. Some signage is intended to raise awareness about healthy behaviors and UB requirements to reduce the risk of COVID-19 transmission.

Campus-wide COVID-19 Signage

Campus COVID-19 signage will reinforce our highest priority messages:

  1. Do a symptom self-check every day and stay home if you are sick or experiencing any COVID-19 symptoms.
  2. Wear a cloth face mask
  3. Social distance: Stay 6 feet away from others.
  4. Wash your hands frequently, or use alcohol-based hand sanitizer when soap and water are not available.

University Facilities and University Communications collaborated to design and produce instructional and directional signage to guide our community in COVID-safe behaviors.

These vinyl floor and wall signs will be installed by University Facilities in high-traffic locations such as:

  • Building entrances, to advise on face mask requirements.
  • Common queueing locations (e.g., 1Capen, dining facilities) to help those waiting in lines to maintain a safe 6-foot social distance from one another.
  • Elevators, to reduce elevator occupancy.
  • Bus shelters, buses and shuttles, to advise on seating and social distancing guidelines.
  • Restrooms, to include “Wash your hands” signage.
  • Stairwell entry doors, to advise people not to prop open Fire Exits.
  • COVID-19 signage will be limited in stairwells, restrooms, etc., due to possible building code implications.

University Facilities will be responsible for the production and installation of the signs in public spaces: all building entries, elevators, restrooms, fire exits, and bus stops.

COVID-19 Signage for Units

University Facilities and Print Services will provide all UB units with a COVID-19 Signage Starter Kit by mid-July. This will include directional signage FPMOs can post to help reduce density and to manage navigation in and around their spaces.

A signage starter kit containing four COVID-19 posters was distributed to all UB units in mid-July. The posters cover these topics:

  • Wear Face Mask
  • Social Distance
  • Wash Hands
  • Combo of these messages

These posters will be printed on card stock. A limited number of laminated versions will also be provided for placement near exterior areas.

Units will receive a quantity of posters appropriate for the square footage each FPMO manages.

Print Services will ship the Signage Starter Kits to your campus location via Campus Mail. If pick up is preferred, please contact Print Services to make arrangements at

Additional posters can be ordered for purchase through Print Services.

What We Need From You

We are asking each FPMO to place these posters in high-visibility locations throughout your unit’s spaces using double-sided tape.

Order Additional COVID-19 Signage

FPMOs may purchase additional COVID-19 signs for installation in their individual units. University Facilities will review these requests and forward them to the Procurement Office to complete the order. Units will be expected to pay for the printing and installation of their signs. Installation of additional unit-requested signs will be done by an outside vendor. There is a nominal fee for installation of these signs.

Production time for additional unit-purchased signage is two weeks. UB will order them immediately upon approval. Subsequent orders will be placed in phases depending on unit need.

Downloadable COVID-19 Posters and Templates are also available on UB’s COVID-19 web page.
