The fall semester is almost here, and we’re excited to welcome back our returning students and welcome our new students for the first time.

We are planning for a great year ahead and encourage you to take advantage of all that UB offers, both in and out of the classroom. Your health and safety remain our highest priorities, along with providing you with a world-class experience.

Please read this email in its entirety and reference the resources below so you can be as prepared as possible for the fall semester. And remember, we're here for you!

Starting Strong this Semester

Set the stage for a successful semester! Review these tips about the class schedule, living and eating on campus, available resources and more.

  • The first day of classes is Monday, Aug. 29.
  • New and returning students who are living on campus will move in by appointment from Aug. 25-28.
  • Consult the Campus Living Welcome Home Guide for arrival information, recommended packing lists and more.
  • Many of UB’s Campus Dining & Shops locations will be open this fall. Whether this is your first time on campus or you are returning for another exciting semester, we look forward to serving you an award-winning experience. 
  • Make sure your technology is up to the task. Before the semester begins, review UBIT’s Student Technology Guide.
  • Student services are available in 1Capen on North Campus and 1Diefendorf on South Campus. 1Capen is open for walk-in services Monday-Friday, 8:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m. Extended hours are available on Saturday, Aug. 27, 11 a.m.-3 p.m., and Monday, Aug. 29, 8:30 a.m.-6 p.m. 1Diefendorf is open for walk-in services Monday-Thursday, 9:30 a.m.-4 p.m., and Friday, 10:30 a.m.-4 p.m. 1Diefendorf is closed daily 1-2 p.m. Check the 1Capen website for the most current information on services available at each location.

Maintaining Your Health and Well-Being

  • Student Health Services has moved! Appointments are now available at 4350 Maple Rd. (corner of Sweet Home Rd.) for your sick and well visits.
  • UB Health and Wellness has the support in place to help you stay well, and we encourage you to take time for self-care when needed.
  • Should you experience symptoms of illness at any point during the academic year, contact Student Health Services (available 24/7 for support and referrals).
    • If you test positive for COVID-19 or have been in close contact with someone who tests positive, please follow these procedures.
  • For the latest safety guidelines and requirements, refer to UB's Health and Safety Guidelines page.

Your Academic Experience

Our expert faculty and staff are here for you and are dedicated to ensuring you have a high-quality and engaging academic experience.

  • Students should consult their schedule before the first day of classes to confirm the date, time, location and mode of instruction of their courses.
  • The Academic Resources and Updates for Students page has information for undergraduate and graduate students about fall semester updates, classes and instruction, academic support, campus involvement and more. The Student Success Gateway is a starting point for undergraduate students to locate information about advisors, resources and success strategies.
  • All undergraduate students should download the Navigate app to make advising appointments, request a tutor, find Study Buddies, and connect with resources and support. This free app offers many benefits for undergraduate students, and graduate students can download Navigate to utilize applicable functionality.
  • The Center for Excellence in Writing offers writing consultation appointments for undergraduate, graduate and professional students and dissertation support. Free tutoring is available to all undergraduate students through numerous campus offices.
  • The Experiential Learning Network has opportunities to complement your academics with undergraduate research and creative activities. You can search for opportunities via the Project Portal.
  • University Libraries are open throughout the semester on both the North and South campuses.
  • For graduate students, Getting Started at UB and Graduate Professional Development offer relevant information about support and resources at UB.

  • UB’s Intercultural and Diversity Center (IDC) coordinates educational, cultural, and social workshops and programs to broaden student perspectives and appreciation for equity, inclusion and social justice.
  • Know the Rules. UB students are members of a community and are required to know the rules and regulations, as outlined in the Student Code of Conduct.

Financial Considerations

UB remains an excellent value as a leading public flagship institution. As you continue to invest in your UB education, refer to the following information about finances and support.

  • UB’s Financial Aid Office provides service and support from student-focused advisors who look forward to working with you. Visit the Financial Aid website to contact an advisor.
  • Other financial resources for students can be found on the Health Promotion Financial Wellness website.
  • Student Accounts will provide the most up-to-date information on tuition and fees. Support is available here:
    • For general student account questions, use the Virtual Vic chatbot on the Student Accounts website.
    • For questions about your specific student account (e.g., balances, transactions, registration holds, etc.):
    • Through direct deposit, your financial aid and/or refunds go directly into your U.S. checking or savings account and you’ll receive your money faster. Sign up for direct deposit via the HUB Student Center (UBITName and password required). Click “Billing/Payments.” Then, select "Payment Options." You will then be brought into QuikPAY, where you can click on "Manage Refunds" in the menu.
    • Sign up for UB’s payment plan. Enrolling is fast and easy, and tuition and fee payments can be spread out over three or four payments.
  • Part-time employment and Work-Study opportunities will be posted in Bullseye powered by Handshake. The Career Design Center has workshops scheduled to assist students in developing job-seeking skills.

Your UB Experience

We’re looking forward to welcoming all students back to campus in True Blue fashion! We know how important it is to connect with your friends and classmates and to take part in unique UB experiences and traditions. Here is some information on what to expect for life outside the classroom.

  • Fall Opening will feature exciting programming to get you back into the swing of things.
  • New undergraduate students participate in New to UB initiatives, including the in-person Welcome Weekend, for a strong start at UB. Details will be emailed directly to new students on Aug. 15.
  • After you kick off the semester, set up a time to meet with a Student Engagement Ambassador to learn more about the many ways you can engage with activities on campus.  
  • Join the Marching Band today and take the field with us as we entertain the fans and represent UB! Join the UBMB!
  • Our student organizations are always looking for new members, so find your community this semester by connecting with a club. There are more than 400+ clubs and organizations at UB, so there’s something for everyone.
