1990s Classnotes

William M. McGowan, M.B.A. 1990 & B.A. 1988, was named senior manager at the accounting firm Fiddler & Company LLP. He recently completed a graduate tax certificate program at UB’s Institute for Tax Studies. He resides in Williamsville, NY.

James M. Argento, B.S. 1991, is instructing student pilots in the T-1A Jayhawk at Vance Air Force Base in Oklahoma. Previously, he served as a C-5 Galaxy instructor pilot at Travis Air Force Base in California.

Robert P. Heary, J.D. 1991 & B.S. 1986, has joined Hiscock & Barclay in Buffalo, NY, as a partner, focusing on labor and employment issues, as well as environmental law. He is a member of the labor and employment practice group and lectures frequently on related issues.

Scott Kroll, B.A. 1991, has joined the firm Chelus, Herdzik, Speyer, Monte & Pajak PC as an associate. He will be working with the other members of the firm in handling not only the firm’s litigation files, but also general practice matters, including real estate, matrimonial work and wills and estates. He resides in Orchard Park, NY.

David C. Mammano, B.A. 1991, publisher of Next Step Magazine, has released its premier Canadian edition, a career and college planning publication for students preparing for life after high school. The Canadian edition will help Canadian students discover their opportunities for postsecondary education in Canada or the United States. It will be published biannually and distributed by guidance counselors to students in Ontario, CA, high schools. Next Step Magazine, begun almost seven years ago, now has editions in 12 U.S. states, the Caribbean and Canada. He lives in Victor, NY.

John M. Walsh, J.D. 1991, joined Lipsitz, Green, Fahringer, Roll, Salisbury & Cambria LLP as an associate in the labor and employment law department. Previously manager of labor relations for Delaware North Companies Inc., he resides in Hamburg, NY.

Paul A. Quebral, M.B.A. 1992 & B.A. 1986, is vice president and chief operating officer at Reid Petroleum, where he was most recently director of business development. He lives in Amherst, NY.

Yogesh Kumar, M.B.A. 1993, has been named assistant manager of the National Stock Exchange of India Limited in Bandra, Mumbai. Responsible for the exchange’s clearing and settlement operations, Kumar resides in Bulandshahr, UP, India.

Emilie M. Schneider, M.S.W. 1993 & B.A. 1991, has joined Goodwill Industries of Western New York as employee assistance counselor for welfare-to-work and disabled employees. She has eight years’ experience as a child and family therapist and lives in Buffalo, NY.

Mark Beese, M.B.A. 1994 & B.S. 1987, has been named director of firm marketing at Holland & Hart LLP in Denver, CO. In his new position, he will assume responsibility for managing and directing all marketing, communications and public relations for the law firm, which has more than 250 attorneys and offices throughout the Rocky Mountain region. Before relocating to Denver, Beese served on the boards of the Greater Niagara Frontier Council of the Boy Scouts of America, Leadership Buffalo and Explore & More Children’s Museum in East Aurora, NY. A 1995 graduate of Leadership Buffalo and a 2002 class member of Leadership Denver, he has been active with the United States Law Firm Group’s marketing committee and is a member of the Legal Marketing Association.

Sudip K. Mazumder, M.S. 1994, received a Ph.D. in electrical and computer engineering from Virginia Tech University and is currently an assistant professor in the department of electrical and computer engineering at the University of Illinois. He resides in Chicago, IL.

Michael Pettit, B.A. 1995 & B.S. 1995, is product manager at Cable & Wireless Ltd., e-Solutions in Houston, TX. As product manager, he can propose, develop and launch $7 million Commerce One eMarketplaces of buyers and suppliers. As senior database architect, he centralized information into a support tool for decision-making.He has also been a member of the American Mathematical Society since 1995. He lives in Houston.

Karin Socha, M.B.A. 1995, has been promoted to manager in the assurance and advisory business services practice at Ernst & Young, LLP in Buffalo, NY. As a manager, she will continue and expand on her work as a business advisor to Ernst & Young’s Buffalo-based clients. Ernst & Young offers audit, tax, corporate finance and transaction services to many leading global corporations and emerging growth companies. Socha and her husband, Scott, currently reside in Aurora, NY, with their daughter.

Thomas F. Ferris, J.D. 1996, has formed the law firm of Connors & Ferris LLP. This practice focuses on representing insured workers before the courts of New York State, the Workers’ Compensation Board and the Social Security Administration. He resides with his wife and three children in Brockport, NY.

Jeb D. Tyler, B.S. 1996, is cofounder and vice president of marketing for 5LINX Enterprises Inc., a direct sales company based in Rochester, NY. Formed in November 2000, the company already has more than 2000 independent representatives across the United States. 5LINX markets a wide variety of telecommunications products; more information can be found at www.5LINX.com. Tyler was profiled in the November 2001 trade publication Network Marketing Lifestyles. He and his wife live in Rochester.

Melissa Fassel, B.A. 1997, received her M.A. in applied linguistics, summa cum laude, in December 2001 from the University of Massachusetts in Boston. She currently works as a web developer in Boston, where she also resides.

Renee M. Segina, B.S. 1997, has been promoted to manager at Lumsden & McCormick LLP, Certified Public Accountants and Advisors, in Buffalo, NY. Segina has experience working with human service, health care and a variety of not-for-profit organizations in the areas of auditing, taxation and financial reporting. She currently conducts and manages the audit fieldwork for hospitals, county governments, school districts and not-for-profit organizations.

Joanne C. Basta, Ph.D. 1998, a mathematics instructor in the Niagara Wheatfield Central School District in Sanborn, NY, has been named to the 10th Annual “40 Under Forty” honor roll of Business First. Selection is based on professional excellence and community involvement—young adults with the drive and creativity to make a real difference in Western New York. Basta, who teaches at both the middle school and collegiate levels, presents and publishes research and has received more than a dozen educational grants. She serves on numerous civic and religious boards and committees.

Eric Gray, J.D. 1998, is an associate in investment banking at Credit Suisse First Boston in New York, NY, where he currently resides.

Thomas E. Obst, Ph.D. 1998 & M.S. 1984, a certified registered nurse anesthetist, has been named “researcher of the year” by the American Association of Nurse Anesthetists. This annual award recognizes a nurse anesthetist who has contributed significantly to the anesthesia profession through research. A clinical professor and director of UB’s nurse anesthetist program and patient simulation center, Obst has focused his recent research on the identification of the determinants of obstetrical anesthesia care among women in upstate New York. Over the years, he has presented these and other research findings before several international, national and state forums, and has published in a number of peer-reviewed journals.

Deborah Todaro, B.S. 1999, has joined Lumsden & McCormick LLP as a staff accountant, where she will be responsible for auditing, accounting and tax services to commercial businesses, not-for-profit organizations and individuals. Todaro passed all four parts of the Uniform Certified Public Accounting Exam administered by the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants. Previously a tax accountant with Deloitte & Touche LLP in Buffalo, NY, she resides in Amherst, NY.

Jennifer Wiech, B.S. 1999, is director of operations of Internet advertising for OnlineBuffalo.com in Buffalo, NY. She and her husband, Tom, live in Depew, NY.
