A memorial service will be held at 4:30 p.m. May 17 in the School of Dental Medicine for Harvey D. Sprowl, retired associate dean in the school who died April 27 in Hospice Buffalo. He was 83.
A native of Buffalo, Sprowl earned undergraduate and dental degrees from UB before starting a private practice in 1960 in Williamsville.
He also became a part-time instructor of clinical dentistry at UB and in 1973, became a full-time associate professor of clinical dentistry.
Sprowl retired 1994 as the school’s associate dean of clinical affairs. Among his accomplishments was creation of a model college program for the clinical instruction of dentistry.
An award in his name is given each year at the dental school commencement to a graduating
student who has consistently displayed a genuine concern for patients' needs, has shown a passion for the delivery of quality comprehensive care and has “gone beyond the call of duty.”
Over the years, Sprowl served in many offices in the Eighth District Dental Society and American Dental Association and, at one time, served as president of the Dental Society of New York State.
A longtime resident of Williamsville, he also served as supervising dentist for the Williamsville School District and as a volunteer firefighter. He also was a member of the Amherst Kiwanis Club.
