High school students from across the nation will get a glimpse of the pharmacy profession through UB’s first Pre-Pharmacy Summer Camp.

The three-day camp, hosted by the School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences (SPPS), will teach nearly 60 students the ins and outs of pharmacy practice through activities that simulate combining and dispensing medications, counseling patients and more.

The program will run July 12-14.

“By participating in this program, talented students can explore a health profession that joins their strong interests in math and science, and their desire to help others,” says Christine Stumm, SPPS associate director of admissions and advisement.

“The earlier students identify their career path, the sooner they can streamline their education and graduate study.”

Participants will receive a broad range of learning experiences, including hands-on activities such as compounding, visits to local clinical practices and research labs, and lectures by UB faculty and Buffalo-area SPPS alumni on topics ranging from vaccinations to the future of the profession.

The camp also highlights educational opportunities at SPPS and recommends high school courses students can take to prepare for undergraduate pharmacy coursework.
