The UB community is invited to attend a forum on Tuesday in solidarity against violence toward members of the LGBTQ community in the wake of the mass shooting at a popular gay nightclub in Orlando, Florida, in which 49 people were killed.

The forum will take place from noon to 1:30 p.m. Tuesday in the Intercultural and Diversity Center, 240 Student Union, North Campus.

The forum will allow participants to share, commune and process their thoughts and feelings in response to the violence that occurred at Pulse Orlando early Sunday.

Sponsored by Wellness Education Services, the Intercultural and Diversity Center and the Office of Equity, Diversity and Inclusion, the forum is open to all.

Members of the UB campus community on Monday reacted to the news, extending their condolences to those impacted by the violence.

“All of us in the Gender Institute would like to express our feelings of horror and distress following the outrageous massacre in Orlando. We stand in solidarity with all LGBTQ people throughout the world in denouncing hatred, bigotry and violence,” said Kari Winter, director of UB's Institute for Research and Education on Women and Gender.”

“In the early 1980s when I was working with the peace movement in Israel, I asked a Christian Palestinian Israeli how he negotiated the conflicts inherent in his identity. He said, ‘When Israelis are attacked, I am an Israeli. When Palestinians are attacked, I am a Palestinian. When Christians are attacked, I am a Christian.’ This response has been to me a guiding light in the quest for justice and peace,” she added.
