‘Narrating Wellness’ topic of symposium

Published March 20, 2014

“Narrating Wellness,” the 2014 edition of the Gender Institute’s annual “Sex, Gender, Health Symposium,” will take place from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. March 25 in 210 Student Union, North Campus.

The event is free and open to the public. Advance registration is required.

Symposium organizers say that statistics alone cannot capture an individual’s complex, lived experiences of disease, injury, resilience and well-being. Through presentations, roundtable discussions and storytelling, the symposium will expose participants to diverse narratives of wellness and examine how such deeper perspectives can enrich research and practice at the intersection of sex, gender and health.

Topics include transgender wellness, disability, wellness, veterans and masculinity, disability and domestic violence, campus prevention of sexual assault and how to implement projects. Presenters include Jim Bono, Department of History; Braden Linn and Liana Bay-Cheng, School of Social Work; Sherri Darrow, Wellness Education Services; Mike Rembis, Department of History and Center for Disability Studies; and Chrysten Jackson, Gay and Lesbian Youth Services.

The complete schedule of events can be viewed online.

Co-sponsoring the symposium with the Gender Institute are the Cultures and Texts Strategic Strength and the Office of Strategic Initiatives in the Office of the Provost.
