Kurtz to discuss his work

Published November 26, 2012

Steve Kurtz, professor and chair of the Department of Visual Studies, will talk about his most recent work during a presentation at 7 p.m. Nov. 27 in Hallwalls Contemporary Arts Center, 341 Delaware Ave. at Tupper Street, Buffalo.

The cost is $5 for the general public, $4 for Hallwalls members and free for UB students.

One of the few Buffalo-based artists celebrated and working around the world, Kurtz will speak about his four major projects of the year.

Much of Kurtz’s work features the Critical Art Ensemble, which he co-founded 25 years ago. This collective of five tactical media practitioners from across the U.S.—and with various specializations—famously operates at the intersections of art, technology, radical politics and critical theory.

The projects Kurtz will discuss are “A Public Misery Message: A Temporary Monument to Global Economic Inequality” and “Winning Hearts and Minds,” installations completed for this year’s Documenta 13, a cultural event of world standing held every five years in Kassel, Germany; “New Alliance,” featured as part of a yearlong, eco-art project at the Parco Arte Vivente Center for Contemporary Art in Turin, Italy; and “Disturbances,” a large, illustrated text of major Critical Art Ensemble projects that was published this year.

“Disturbances” will be available for purchase and signing following the talk.
