Parking and Transportation Services is excited to announce that beginning Aug. 26, all UB Stampede buses will feature SmartTrack, a passenger access validation tool that will require riders to swipe their UB Card through a card reader in order to ride the bus.
UB Stampede buses are those that provide transportation between the North and South campuses for students, faculty and staff, and the transfer of students from the Ellicott Complex to the Spine on the North Campus.
SmartTrack will not be installed on any of the UB shuttles at this time.
Maria Wallace, director of parking and transportation services, says, “This change reflects the University Life and Services’ commitment to service improvement and assessment. It ensures riders of these buses are current UB students, faculty or staff members and provides data beyond passenger counts. The system will track the number of resident versus commuter students and further break down the data to riders’ standing as freshmen, sophomores, etc.”
From Aug. 26 to Sept. 29, as the system is being introduced, riders who do not present their UB Card will be reminded by the bus operator about the change in policy.
Beginning Sept. 30, riders will be required to swipe their UB Card to ride the bus.
Exceptions will be made for riders who present identification from affiliated partner institutions on the UB Downtown Campus, visitors accompanied by a member of the campus community (only two guests allowed per student/faculty/staff member) and those who present a ticket or ticket stub for an event being held on campus on the same day or evening on which they board the bus.
