The scholarly, research and creative achievements of UB students will be recognized on April 12 at the ninth annual Celebration of Student Academic Excellence.
All members of the UB community are invited to attend the event, which will be held in the Center for the Arts, North Campus.
“There’s an abundance of talent and opportunity here at UB, but we’re so large that it’s possible to lose the bigger picture,” says Andrew Stott, dean of undergraduate education and director of the University Honors College. “The celebration of student excellence allows us to come together as a university to enjoy what a rich and diverse institution we are, while also focusing on the thing that matters most—our students and how far they’ve come,” Stott says.
“We’re all so busy all the time; the students work so hard and the semester rushes by. The celebration is an opportunity to stop, take a breath and say, ‘Wow. Look at the incredible work our students do, look at what they’ve accomplished and how productive they've been.’”
The event will open with a graduate student poster competition from 11:30 to 1:30 p.m. in the Mainstage theater.
Undergraduates will present their posters from noon to 1:45 p.m. in the CFA atrium. More than 200 students will present on more than 160 varied works and projects—a new record for participation, according to Tim Tryjankowski, director of the Center for Undergraduate Research & Creative Activities.
The celebration ceremony, hosted by President Satish K. Tripathi and Provost Charles F. Zukoski, will begin at 2 p.m. in the Drama Theatre. Following remarks by Tripathi and Zukoski, nominees and recipients of various national, SUNY and UB awards will be recognized. Among these awards are nationally competitive scholarships and fellowships, including the Goldwater, Marshall, Truman and Udall scholarships, and Fulbright and National Science Foundation Graduate fellowships; the SUNY Chancellor's Awards for Student Excellence; UB Graduate Student Excellence in Teaching Awards; and UB Undergraduate Awards for Excellence in Research, Scholarship and Creativity.
In addition, UB faculty will be honored for distinguished undergraduate teaching and mentoring.
The ceremony also will feature creative presentations by UB architecture students.
