Susan Udin, professor of physiology and biophysics, served as coordinator and made the presentation at the School 59 site for the "Imagine Yourself as a Scientist" day held last month in four Buffalo elementary schools. The career-day event was designed to highlight the role of science and technology in the 1901 Pan-American Exposition.
Robert A. Bermel, a student in the School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences, has received the G. Milton Shy Award, presented for the best student essay in clinical neurology by the American Academy of Neurology. His essay was entitled "Bicaudate Ratio as a Marker of Brain Atrophy in Multiple Sclerosis."
Donna Ball, assistant to the chair in the Department of Psychiatry, and Cheryl Kishbaugh, assistant dean for graduate medical education, received the John P. Naughton Award at the Annual Faculty Meeting of the School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences. The Naughton Award is presented annually to recognize a "support" person who has made a significant contribution to the mission of the medical school.
Vincent O'Neill, chair of the Department of Theatre and Dance, is playing the role of Frank, the tutor, in the Irish Classical Theatre Company's production of "Educating Rita," which will run through Sunday. O'Neill is the co-founder of the theater and serves as artistic director. UB theatre major Elba Sette-Camara made her professional debut in the production, playing Rita, the student.
Robert Baier, professor of oral diagnostic sciences in the School of Dental Medicine and director of the biomaterials graduate program, has been appointed a member of the National Research Council's Committee on Marine Biotechnology: Development of Marine Natural Products. The National Research Council is the principal operating agency of the National Academy of Sciences and the National Academy of Engineering providing services to the government, the public and the scientific and engineering communities.
John Lambert, senior assistant athletic director for external relations, has been named the Division I-A recipient of the 2000-01 National Association of Collegiate Marketing Administrators (NACMA)/Host Communications Marketer of the Year Award. The annual award, which recognizes marketing excellence on campuses and within college communities, is presented for significant contributions made by a marketing administrator at his or her institution and in his or her region.
WBFO 88.7 FM, UB's National Public Radio affiliate, recently won six Associated Press Awards. The station received a first-place award in the category of "Best Interview" for a piece entitled "Buffalo Jailed Union Leader" by News Director Mark Scott. The station received special mention for several stories, including "Buffalo High School Inmates" by Joyce Kryszak, arts and cultural affairs producer, in the category "Best News Series;" "Hillary vs. Rick" by Scott, Kryszak and Mike McKay, news and public affairs producer, in the "Best Continuing News Coverage" category; "Josie True" by Kryszak and "Napster" by Scott, both in the "Best Enterprise Reporting," category, and "Our Host" by Kryszak in the "Best Feature" category.
