April concert schedule has broad appeal
Performances to range from traditional sonatas to the newest in computer music
The Department of Music will offer a diverse selection of concerts as part of its April concert schedule.
Highly acclaimed pianist Ursula Oppens will return to UB on April 7 to present a program of Beethoven sonatas, as well as pieces by well-known contemporary composers Charles Wuorinen, Elliott Carter and Louis Andriessen.
In addition, French flutist Pierre-Yves Artaud, first-prize winner in flute and chamber music from the Paris Conservatoire who has performed worldwide with such noted conductors as Pierre Boulez, Charles Dutoit, Lawrence Foster and J.C. Casadesus, will appear in a unique master class to be held April 8 and again as a soloist with the Slee Sinfonietta on April 11.
Other highlights of the schedule include an organ recital by UB Professor Emeritus David Fuller on April 14 featuring rarely performed organ masterpieces and two performances by the Cassatt String Quartet, UB's Slee Quartet-in-Residence. In addition, the music department will honor the memory of former faculty member and composer Leo Smit during a memorial concert to be held April 16.

The month will begin with a faculty recital by Jonathan Golove, performing works for cello and electric cello at 8 p.m. Monday in Slee Concert Hall. Tickets are $5 for the performance that will include a recent piece by Donald Erb for vocalizing cellist, a composition influenced by traditional Balinese music and a work written for film by Caspar Johannes Walter.
April's Brown Bag Concert will be held at 12:05 p.m. Tuesday in the Slee lobby. The free program will feature music for solo trumpet, flute quartet and voice with piano, as well as a recap of Stephen Manes performing Beethoven's beloved "Moonlight" sonata.
Pianist Ursula Oppens will offer a master class at 3 p.m. April 6 in Slee. Designed to help young pianists improve their technical and musical skills, the class is free and open to the public.
Oppens also will perform at 8 p.m. April 7 as part of UB's Slee/Visiting Artist Series. Tickets are $12, $9 and $5 for the program that will include Blue Bamboula, Two Diversions for Piano and Image de Moreau, as well as four Beethoven sonatas.
Flutist Pierre-Yves Artaud will present a master class titled "The Polyphonic Flute" at 9 a.m. April 8 in Slee. As part of the class, he will perform two solo pieces written for him, as well as several other selections.
Percussionist Anthony Miranda will present a faculty recital at 8 p.m. April 8 in Slee. Tickets are $5 for the performance of works for percussion featuring 20th- and 21st-century music.
The Cassatt String Quartet will present the fourth concert in the Slee/Visiting Artist Series at 3 p.m. April 9 in Slee. The performance will include Mozart's Divertiment in D Major, K. 136; Daniel Godfrey's String Quartet No. 3 (2000) and Johannes Brahms' String Quartet No. 1 in C-minor. Tickets are $12, $9 and $5.
The Slee Sinfonietta will perform at 8 p.m. April 11 in Slee. The program will include David Felder's Inner Sky, Erik Oņa's Lame Butterfly and Olivier Messiaen's Oiseaux exotiques. A pre-concert lecture to discuss the program will be held at 7:15 p.m. with the composers and conductor Magnus Martensson. Tickets for the performance are $12, $9 and $5.
The UB Choir will perform at 8 p.m. April 13 in Slee. Tickets for the concert, which will include selections by Janequin, Caressimi, Brahms, Barber and Hindemith, are $3.
David Fuller will present a Concert VII in the Organ Recital Series at 8 p.m. April 14 in Slee. Tickets are $5 for the performance that will include the U.S. premiere of a piece that has not been performed in 75 years, as well as an organ Mass in the style of comic opera.
The UB Symphony will perform selections that include Cello Concerto in A minor, Pelleas and Melisande and Ocho por Radio at 8 p.m. April 15 in Slee. Tickets are $3.
Remembering Leo Smit 1922-1999: A Memorial Concert will be held at 3 p.m. April 16 in Baird Recital Hall on the North Campus. Featuring a complete program of Smit's music, performed by the Amherst Saxophone Quartet, pianist Claudia Hoca, pianists Stephen and Freida Manes, soprano Rosiland Rees, soprano Elaint Knecht, oboist Philip West and pianist Nils Vigeland, admission is free.
Work by UB's graduate composition students will be featured in the Graduate Composers' Concert to be held at 8 p.m. April 18 in Slee. The concert will reflect the music department's focus on artistic freedom and innovation, and admission is free.
UB's Hiller Computer Music Studios will continue its series of real-time interactive computer music concerts with a performance to be held at 8 p.m. April 19 in the Black Box Theatre in the Center for the Arts on the North Campus. Admission is free.
The UB Chorus, conducted by Harold Rosenbaum, will perform Joshua, one of Handel's most popular oratorios heralding the leader of the children of Israel in the battle of Jericho, at 8 p.m. April 20 in Slee. Admission is free.
The UB Contemporary Ensemble, directed by Helena Bugallo, will perform at 8 p.m. April 21 in Slee. Admission is free.
The UB Symphonic Band, conducted by Jon Nelson, will feature a performance by guest tuba soloist Raymond Stewart at 8 p.m. April 26 in Slee. Admission is free.
The Cassatt String Quartet will perform the Concert VI in the Slee/Beethoven String Quartet Cycle at 8 p.m. April 28 in Slee. The performance will include Quartet in C Minor, Op. 18, No. 4; Quartet in F. Major, Op. 135, and Quartet in E minor, Op. 59, No. 5. Tickets are $12, $9 and $5.
The UB Percussion Ensemble, directed by Anthony Miranda, will perform at 8 p.m. April 29 in Slee. Admission is free.
The UP Saxophone Ensemble, directed by Harry Fackelman, will perform at 3 p.m. April 30 in Slee. Admission is free.
The UB Jazz Ensemble will perform at 8 p.m. April 30 in Baird. Admission is free.
