Frisch to head ASA
Michael Frisch, professor of history and American studies, has been elected president-elect of the American Studies Association (ASA). Frisch will serve as president-elect from July 1999 through June 2000, when he will begin a two-year term as president.

Frisch With 5,000 members nationwide, the ASA is one the largest and most broad-based membership organization in the field of American studies.

From a background in U.S. urban-social history, Frisch has published groundbreaking work in oral history theory and practice, and the history of urban political economy.

Frisch is a former Fulbright Professor in American Studies at the University of Venice, headed the Rockefeller Humanities Institute at UB and is deeply involved in projects related to industrial heritage, oral history and the 100th anniversary celebration of the Pan American Exposition, which was held in Buffalo in 1901.

Sheffer named Public Administrator of Year
Sheffer John B. Sheffer, II, director of the Institute for Local Governance and Regional Growth, has been named 1999 Public Administrator of the Year by the Niagara Frontier Chapter of the American Society for Public Administration (ASPA).

Sheffer, director of the institute since it was founded in Summer 1997, is a former state senator and assemblyman, and former mayor of the Village of Williamsville. He is a faculty member in the Law School and School of Architecture and Planning, and previously was UB's interim vice president for public service and urban affairs.

The ASPA Public Administrator of the Year award is presented to an outstanding public administrator whose career exhibits high standards of professional excellence, dedication, skill and accomplishment.

Sheffer, who joined the UB faculty in 1993 after five years in the New York State Senate and 10 in the Assembly, was a founding member of the UB Governance Project, a faculty team that studied the structure and function of governments and public service delivery in Erie County.

AIDS clinical trial hits the half-way mark
The AIDS vaccine clinical trial in Buffalo has recruited half its 90 participants in time for the 2nd annual AIDS Vaccine Day on Tuesday.

The Buffalo clinical trial is being conducted by UB's Division of HIV Medicine, headed by Ross Hewitt, who also is medical director of Immunodeficiency Services at Erie County Medical Center. The local trial is one of 50 centers across the U.S. testing the effectiveness of a drug called AIDSVAX B/B on volunteers who currently are HIV-negative, but are at high risk of acquiring the virus through sexual transmission.

Volunteers still are needed. Persons interested in being part of the study should call 898-5680 for further information.

Medicinal-chemistry symposium set at UB
"Drug Resistance: Molecular Mechanisms and Intervention Strategies" will be the subject of the School of Pharmacy's 40th annual medicinal-chemistry symposium to be held Monday through Wednesday in Room 225 of the Natural Sciences Building.

Sponsored by the Department of Medicinal Chemistry and cosponsored by the Western New York section of the American Chemical Society, the symposium will feature presentations on aspects of drug resistance that arise during treatment for diseases such as herpes, hepatitis B and C, influenza, AIDS and cancer.

Martin House docent to speak at luncheon
Patricia Talmon, head of the speakers bureau for the Darwin Martin House docents, will present a talk and slide show on the Martin House, designed by famed architect Frank Lloyd Wright, at a noon luncheon Tuesday in the Center for Tomorrow on the North Campus.
