send this article to a friendAnthony L. Russo has been named "Engineer of the Year" by the UB Engineering Alumni Association. Russo, a mechanical engineer, is retired from his post as executive director of Calspan-University at Buffalo Research Center (CUBRC) and as vice president of Calspan Corp.'s Advanced Technology Center.

Brenda L. Perez, a second-year student in the School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences, has been selected to serve as student membership liaison for the American Academy of Family Physicians (AAFP) for the 1998-99 academic year.

Christopher Gibbs, assistant professor of music, has been chosen as a winner one of this year's ASCAP-Deems Taylor Awards, presented annually to American authors and journalists whose books and articles on music are selected for their excellence. Gibbs' article, "Schubert's Final Years," published in The Schubertiade, was chosen in the Symphonic and Concert articles category. He will be honored at a reception Dec. 3 in Manhattan.

Heather Holmes, director of new student programs, Sara Stensgaard, coordinator of the Freshman Year Experience and Matt Weigand, graduate assistant for new student programs at UB, gave a presentation on extending orientation into the first-year curriculum at the recent National Orientation Directors Association annual national conference in Austin, Texas.

Genevieve W. Kanski, clinical assistant professor in the School of Nursing, has received the second annual Dean's Award for Excellence in Teaching from the school. Kanski was selected by a committee that reviewed nominations of current faculty submitted by alumni, students, faculty and staff.
