September 1,1994: Vol26n1: J. Curtis Hellriegel, obstetrician, gynecologist Services held July 26 for J. Curtis Hellriegel, a Buffalo obstetrician and gynecologist for many years, who served as an associate professor of obstetrics and gynecology at UB. Hellriegel died July 22 in Millard Fillmore Hospital after a long illness. A graduate of the UB medical school, Hellriegel interned at Buffalo General Hospital and served residencies in obstetrics at Kensington Hospital for Women and University of Pennsylvania Hospital, both in Philadelphia. An early advocate of natural childbirth, he was the John Goodrich Clark Fellow in gynecology at University of Pennsylvania Hospital. He served on the staffs of Buffalo General, Millard Fillmore, Deaconess, Sisters, Children's and St. Francis hospitals. In 1966, he was elected chief of staff at Millard Fillmore. Retiring in 1987, Hellriegel was honored in 1983 for 50 years of service to the field of medicine by the Medical Society of the State of New York. In 1991, he was honored for his 50 years in medicine by Millard Fillmore Hospital. He was a member of the Buffalo Gynecologic and Obstetric Society, American Medical Association, American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, American Society of Abdominal Surgeons, Canadian Fertility Society, American College of Surgeons, International College of Surgeons, Pan-American Medical Association, and Royal Society of Physicians. Survivors include his wife, Dr. Pauline Hellriegel; a son, Dr. John C., Jr. of Amherst; two daughters, Dr. Paula H. Dumont of Franklin, Tenn. and Lois A. of Eggertsville; and five grandchildren.
