UB 20, Bowling Green 17

UB overcame three turnovers and a second-half deficit when redshirt freshman Marquis Dwarte raced in from 27 yards out with 1:27 remaining as the Bulls claimed a 20-17 victory over Mid-American Conference rival Bowling Green. The win was historic in many ways for Buffalo: It was the first-ever Mid-American Conference win for the Bulls in their second season in the MAC. It snapped an 18-game losing streak dating back to 1998 when UB beat Canisius, 47-0. It was the first win over a Division I-A opponent since the Bulls beat Holy Cross, 13-0, on October 31, 1970.

To win, the Bulls (1-3, 1-0 in the MAC) relied on a defense that allowed just 175 total yards, including just 75 after intermission. Then the Bulls' offense had to make a game-winning 80-yard drive with under four minutes to go in regulation. Quarterback Joe Freedy, who completed 24-of-38 passes for 183 yards and was sacked three times, saved his best for last.

Athletes of
the week
Duane Williams led the UB defense in the football team's 20-17 win over Bowling Green Saturday. The junior linebacker had a school record four sacks and totaled six tackles with a forced fumble as UB limited to the Falcons to 175 yards of total offense.

Paula Listrani scored one goal and added an assist in the soccer team's 2-0 win over Marshall on Sunday. Listrani scored the goal in the 88th minute to seal the win for the Bulls.

After an 11-yard pass to junior Dahnel Singfield, it was left to Dwarte, who subbed for injured starter Bam McDonald, to steal the show. Dwarte took a pitch left, made one cut and than broke two arm tackles to race 27 yards for the go-ahead score.

Bowling Green had one last chance, but junior linebacker Duane Williams sacked backup quarterback Ricky Schneider on second-and-10, forcing a fumble that the Falcons fell on at their own 11. On 4th-and-28, Williams sealed the game with his school-record fourth sack of the game.

The Bulls opened their Mid-American Conference season at Akron and fell 3-0, the first time UB has been shut out this season.

The Zips got on the board halfway through the first half on a goal by Christer Larsen at the 27:36 mark. Just before the end of the half, Larsen scored his second goal of the game off a pass from Chris Garett at the 44:00 mark. Akron would add to that 2-0 lead in the second half as Matt Boswell scored off a pass from Will Kletzien at the 70:38 mark for the 3-0 final.

Women's

Ohio 2, UB 1; UB 2, Marshall 0

The Bulls lost their first Mid-American Conference game of the season-and the second-straight game overall-after a 2-1 loss to Ohio Friday night.

Both teams battled for possession early on, as neither could get many shots off. Late in the first half a UB shot was deflected out by an Ohio defender, but UB's Darrah Graziano was there to collect the ball and put it past the Bobcats keeper, giving the Bulls a 1-0 lead at the 35:50 mark.

The Bobcats tied the score just before the end of the half.

In the second half, Ohio took the lead in the 57th minute and while the Bulls had many opportunities to tie, they all fell short.

The Bulls bounced back, though, and used the foot of Paula Listrani to defeat Marshall, 2-0, on Sunday and improve to 2-1 in the MAC.
