Hofstra 44, UB 36

The Bulls closed out the 1998 sea-son Nov. 21, losing 44-36 to Hofstra.

Theron Walker finished with 86 yards on 17 carries. Chad Salisbury and Kali Watkins connected for three straight touchdown strikes. Watkins finished the game with seven receptions for 144 yards and three TDs. It was the 11th 100-yard game of his career, an all-time school record. Salisbury completed 19-of-34 passes for 270 yards. Josh Roth led in rushing with 88 yards on 18 carries.

Drew Haddad had four receptions for 52 yards and tied his own record for receptions in a season with 67. Antonio Perry led the defense with 11 tackles, while Josh Trexler added nine tackles and a pass breakup. Eric Pipkins had eight tackles and returned an interception 56 yards for his first career touchdown.

Volleyball

Central Michigan 3, UB 2 Eastern Michigan 3, UB 0

The volleyball squad ended its season unable to get a win in the Mid-American Conference, losing matches to Central Michigan (8-15, 14-16, 15-2, 15-7, 15-13) and Eastern Michigan (5-15, 10-15, 8-15) Nov. 20-21 in Alumni Arena. Chassey Stubler led the Bulls with 13 kills, two service aces and 17 digs against Central Michigan. Somer Deschambault had two kills and 15 digs against Eastern Michigan.

Basketball

Women's

UB 74, Robert Morris 41 Rutgers 70, UB 47

UB 75, Southwest Louisiana 54 UB 70, Rhode Island 61

UB 73, Niagara 61

On Nov. 24, the Bulls defeated Robert Morris, 74-41. Megan McCray led the team with 18 points and Samantha Cerny had 10 points. Tiffany Bell pulled down seven rebounds in the win.

In the Rutgers Tournament, UB lost to the host Scarlet Knights, 70-47, in the opening round. Bell led UB with 12 points and seven rebounds. Mari McClure had 11 points and six rebounds. UB then defeated Southwest Louisiana, 75-54. Four Bulls' players scored in double-figures, led by McClure with 16 points, Catherine Jacob with 13, Bell with 12 and Kim Coon with 10.

The team defeated host Rhode Island, 70-61, on Nov. 18 and visiting Niagara, 73-61, on Nov. 21. Coon led with 16 points and three boards. Bell and McClure pitched in 15 and 12 points and Cerny had seven rebounds and nine points.

In the non-conference win against the Purple Eagles, four players scored in double figures. Bell led the way with 16 points and six boards. Cerny and Jacob poured in 14 points apiece, while McClure scored 13 points and contributed five assists.

Men's

UB 49, Canisius 48 UB 64, Cornell 63

Duquesne 75, UB 56

UB beat back a comeback by Canisius to hold on for a 49-48 win in the Bulls' Nov. 24 home opener. UB was led by Louis Campbell with a career-high 18 points and Nikolai Alexeev, who came off the bench to score 14 points and grab a game- and career-high eight rebounds. Alexei Vasiliev also had eight rebounds as UB out-rebounded its opponent for the first time this season.

The team split games on the road, defeating host Cornell, 64-63, on Nov. 18 and losing to Duquesne, 75-56, on Nov. 21.

Against Cornell-UB's first win of the season-the Bulls were led by Koran Godwin, who scored 15 points off the bench. Louis Campbell added a career-best 16 points and six steals. Will Campbell pulled down eight boards and blocked three shots, while Ryan Peterson added six assists.

Against Duquesne, UB was led by Maliso Libomi, with 11 points and seven rebounds. Vasiliev also scored a career-high 10 points.

Swimming

Men's

UB 123, Oakland 108

The men's swimming team remained undefeated by downing visiting Oakland University, 123-108, on Nov. 21. The Bulls were led by John Nilles, who took first-place finishes in the 50-meter freestyle (21.25) and the 100-meter freestyle (46.83). He was also a member of the winning 400-meter freestyle relay squad (3:10.89), along with Brian Berthelotte, Jose Moncion and Dexter Tatum.

First-place finishes also came from Dan Hickey in the 200-meter freestyle (1:43.5) and Jason McLachlan in the 200 individual medley (1:58.31).

Dave Sofer captured both diving events by placing first in the one- and three-meter dives with 236.63 and 250.80 points, respectively.

Women's

The UB women's swimming team earned its first MAC victory Nov. 21, defeating host Akron, 198-95. Kim Theetge (100 breaststroke, 1:08.92; 200 breaststroke, 2:34.69), Inger Rooneem (100 backstroke, 1:00.21; 100 freestyle, 53.89) and Lieselle Trinidad (100 butterfly, 1:00.22; 200 butterfly, 2:13.11) had two first-place finishes each. Theetge, Rooneem, Trinidad and Michelle Bricknell also were members of the victorious 200-meter medley-relay squad (1:52.53).

Wrestling

The wrestling team opened with its first tournament of the season, finishing second in the Bloomsburg Invitational. The Bulls' three captains-Brian Schaal (125-pound class), Jacob Schaus (174-pound class) and Matt Ricci (184-pound class)-all took first place. Other top finishers for UB included John Eschenfelder in second place in the heavyweight division and third-place finishes by Bill Jacoutot at 141 pounds and Josh States at 197 pounds.
