Rose Weinstein Memorial Award

Sara A. Brallier, above left, a candidate for a master's degree in sociology, is the winner of the 1997 Rose Weinstein Memorial Award, sponsored by UB's Emeritus Center. She is shown with Jan E. Mutchler, UB associate professor of sociology. The Weinstein Award, which carries a $200 prize, was created in honor of the late Rose Weinstein, a UB faculty member and one of the founders of the Emeritus Center. Presented May 13 at a ceremony in the Emeritus Center, the award is given for studies on aging. Brallier based her entry on her master's thesis, "An Analysis of the Relationship Between Fertility and the Living Arrangements of Elderly Women, 1900-1990." Mutchler supervised the development of Brallier's winning entry. The winning entry was chosen by the Emeritus Center's Awards Committee, chaired by Constantine A. Yeracaris, UB professor emeritus of sociology. In her entry, Brallier notes that older women today are much more likely to live alone than at the turn of the century, with particularly significant changes in patterns of such behavior occurring in the World War II era.
