Amy Williams Wins Thayer Prize

Amy C. Williams, a candidate for a Ph.D. in music composition, has been awarded the $2,500 Thayer Prize in the Arts. The awards are given to young creative and performing artists as they graduate from the State University to establish professional careers.

Williams, a composer and pianist, received an M.M. in music performance last year at UB and holds a B.A. in music composition/piano performance from Bennington College. She was a fellowship student at Funen Music Conservatory in Denmark.

"In the upcoming year, I will write several extended compositions and significantly expand my solo piano repertoire for competitions and performance," Williams said. She will perform in Vermont and Maine and plans a European tour in the fall of 1998. She will present her two-part seminar, "Writing for the Contemporary Piano" at colleges and universities.

The Thayer Fund was established in 1984 by the late Walter N. Thayer, chairman of Whitney Communications Corp. in New York City, in honor of his wife, Jeanne C. Thayer, who was a State University Trustee from 1974-1984.
