The following are the 1997 winners of student poetry contests held recently at UB:

Academy of American Poets Poetry Prize

Winner: Nick Costalas, a senior majoring in English with concentrations in 20th-century American literature and creative writing.

Honorable Mention: Jill M. Colella, a senior majoring in English who plans to begin the English literature program at the University of Maryland; Loren Goodman, a first-year graduate student in English who previously was a lifeguard in Kansas and a poetry instructor in Arizona.

Friends of the University Libraries Undergraduate Poetry Prize

Winner: Alysia Roehrig, who will receive two degrees, a B.A in psychology and a B.A. in English and linguistics. Following graduation she plans to work toward a Ph.D. in educational psychology.

Honorable Mention: Pamela A. Fiehn, a full-time employee in the School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences who is working toward a master's degree in English.

Scribblers Prize

Winner: Jill M. Colella

Arthur Axlerod Memorial Award

Winners: Nick Costalas, Jill M. Colella, Paul Feigenbaum, a senior majoring in English and a University Honors Scholar.

George Knight Houpt Prize

Winner: Jill M. Colella
