MEN'S BASKETBALL
The Bulls moved to 2-1 in the Mid-Continent Conference with their 80-62 victory over Missouri-Kansas City at Alumni Arena on Saturday.

UB forced UMKC into 10 second-half turnovers to pull away from a 29-27 halftime lead, scoring 51 points in the second half. A key 14-0 run early in the second half gave the Bulls the momentum as UB built as much as a 20-point cushion to seal the win. Rasaun Young became the ninth Bull to score 1,000 points in his career hitting the milestone with a layup two minutes into the contest. Young scored 20 moving past Jack Chalmers (1948-51) for eighth place with 1,019. He led the Bulls with eight rebounds.

Mike Martinho, also moving close to the 1,000-point plateau, led the Bulls with 29 points including 8-of-16 from the floor and five assists. He nailed 10-of-12 free throws in the second half.

The Bulls dropped a 72-55 decision at conference leader Valparaiso in front of over 4,000 fans Jan. 8. The Bulls, who trailed 16-13 at the nine-minute mark, saw Valpo go on a 14-0 run to take control and lead at halftime 37-18. That lead grew to as much as 46-22 with 15:55 left before the Bulls went on a 16-2 run to close to 48-38 with 12:38 remaining in the game. However, the Crusaders shot 53.8 percent in the second half to hold off the Bulls the rest of the way.

UB was led by Mike Martinho and Rasaun Young, who each had 15 points. Martinho also played outstanding defense on Mid-Con pre-season MVP selection Bryce Drew, holding the former Indiana State Player of the Year to 4-of-13 shooting and 13 points. Young had seven rebounds, four steals and three assists, while Robert Harris continued his fine play with 12 points and 10 rebounds-his second double-double of the season and sixth of his career.

The Bulls are at Western Illinois Jan. 18 and return to Alumni Arena for a clash with Youngstown State Jan. 22 at 7:30 p.m.



WOMEN'S BASKETBALL
UB's women's basketball team moved to 12-1 and a perfect 4-0 in Mid-Continent Conference play with their 80-52 win over Missouri-Kansas City at Alumni Arena on Saturday.

The Royals jumped out to a 37-28 halftime lead, then went on a 9-3 run to open the second half and put the game away. Kim Coon nailed two of her five three-pointers to seal the victory.

Missouri-Kansas City was held to just 27.1 percent field goal shooting on the night while the Royals connected on 42.3 percent of their attempts. In the second half, UB held UMKC to just 5-of-28 shooting (17.9 percent) outscoring the Kangaroos 43-24 in the final 20 minutes. Coon and Megan McCray led the Royals with 17 points each, while Doty, Charissa Gardner and Alicia Kollmorgen added 10 each. Kollmorgen led the Royals on the boards with eight rebounds.

Following the win, it was announced that for the second consecutive year the Mid-Continent Conference's women's basketball tournament would be held at Alumni Arena March 6-8. The winner earns an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament.

The Royals began their week with a 77-73 win at Valparaiso. UB, ranked second in the country in free-throw percentage, shot 78.6 percent (22-of-28) to put the Crusaders away. UB was 20-of-25 (80 percent) in second half.

After grabbing a 34-29 halftime lead, UB led by as many as 10 early in the final stanza before Valpo took a four-point lead, 49-45, with 11:18 to play. The Royals took the lead for good when Doty nailed a three-pointer with 9:08 remaining to go ahead 54-52. UB went 11-of-12 from the line, including a perfect 8-of-8 by Catherine Jacob, in the final 2:20 to cap the win. Jacob scored a team-high 18 points and was 11-of-12 from the charity stripe. LaToya Crumpton and Gardner each added 14 points with Gardner grabbing seven rebounds.

The Royals will face Youngstown State on the road Jan. 18 for the first time since the two met in the Mid-Con finals last season. Their next home contest is Feb. 1 vs. Valparaiso.



MEN'S SWIMMING
Freshman Dan Hickey won two individual events and was part of a winning relay squad for the Bulls as UB dropped a 122-119 decision to Maryland-Baltimore County Jan. 11. It was the season's first dual meet loss for the Bulls, now 4-1.

Hickey took the 200 freestyle in a time of 1:42.13 while capturing the 100 free in 47.60, beating out UMBC's Jeremy Sansbury in both events. Hickey was also part of the Bulls' 400-free relay squad with Jose Moncion, Josh Pieczonka and John Nilles. The Bulls finished in 3:11.81.



WRESTLING
UB scored a pair of dual meet victories in Washington Jan. 10 to even their mark at 2-2. The Bulls rolled past James Madison 32-9 and host American 32-10. John Stutzman scored a pair of major decisions at 150 pounds to improve his individual record to 20-1. Jason Wartinger at 126, Jeromy McVige at 134, Eric Gross at 177 and John Eschenfelder at 190 were also victorious in both matches on the day.

UB hosts the New York State Collegiate Wrestling Championships Friday and Saturday.
