ROYALS VOLLEYBALL ON HOT STREAK
The Royals needed just 50 minutes to defeat visiting Robert Morris 15-10, 15-5, 15-6 Friday night at Alumni Arena.

UB used a balance attack, playing all 14 squad members in the three games and giving the starters much of the night off. Aprille Sweeting and Corinn Hirst led the Royals with four kills each, while Somer Deschambault recorded 11 assists and four digs in two games. Sweeting and Candi Sims led UB with three blocks each.

UB needed a 20-18 come-from-behind, rally-scoring fifth game to defeat Siena Saturday night at Alumni Arena. The Royals downed the Saints 15-13, 15-6, 5-15, 12-15, 20-18.

The Royals placed four players in double-figure kills, led by Amy Burda's 19. Sims, playing her final contest at Alumni Arena, added 17 with a team-best 20 digs while Hirst and Sweeting tallied 15 and 11 kills respectively. Burda also added 19 digs.

Deschambault, the freshman setter, had a career-high 59 assists in the match along with 11 digs. Sweeting led UB with six blocks. The Royals (15-13) have now won two in a row and seven of their last eight.

The Royals will now play the remainder of the season on the road beginning with the second Mid-Continent East Division cluster at Central Connecticut State on Friday. UB leads the East Division with a 3-0 record.

WOMEN'S SOCCER
The Royals fell to 6-7-3 over the weekend with their road losses to Detroit Mercy, 4-0, and Toledo, 2-1.

In the loss to the Titans, UB goalkeeper Joanne Chillingsworth stopped eight shots. The win by Detroit was their 10th straight and gives them a 13-3-1 record.

The Royals allowed two early first-half goals against Toledo, falling behind 2-0 at the half. UB cut the margin in half with just 1:40 remaining in the match as Lori Perillo netted her ninth goal of the season off of a corner kick. It was also the senior's 37th of her career, moving her into third place on the Royals' all-time goal scoring list.

The Royals travel to Siena for a match on Thursday before returning to RAC Field for the home finale at 10 a.m. Saturday against Howard. UB concludes the regular season on Nov. 4 at American.

MEN'S SOCCER
The Bulls played a pair of Mid-Continent Conference East Division matches over the weekend, falling to Howard 4-0 and tying Central Connecticut State 0-0. UB is now 1-12-2 on the season and 1-3-1 in league play.

UB was held to just two shots against the Bison as Howard's Mike Lawrence scored all four goals. Lawrence scored three goals when Howard defeated UB 7-2 earlier this season at RAC Field.

In the match against arch nemesis Central Connecticut, UB goalkeeper Jim Schoenberg stopped 12 shots in 120 minutes of action. Schoenberg made some critical saves to preserve the shutout. In the 73rd minute, Schoenberg stopped a shot by Paul Wright deep in the UB end. Schoenberg came out and knocked away the attempt from point-blank range. A minute later, Schoenberg came through again, knocking another Wright attempt out of bounds from the left corner of the box.

UB's best scoring opportunity came late in the overtime when Joe Mercik's blast from about 18 yards just missed the crossbar. UB was outshot by CCSU 16-5.

The weekend's loss and tie eliminates the Bulls from making the Mid-Con post-season tournament for the first time in UB's three-year membership in the league. The Bulls conclude the season with a pair of November matches. First up is a conference meeting with Oneonta on the road on Saturday. UB concludes the season with a Nov. 5 meeting against Colgate at RAC Field at 7 p.m.

MEN'S & WOMEN'S TENNIS
Both squads completed their fall dual seasons Saturday with wins over Niagara and Youngstown State. The Bulls finish the fall with a 6-3 mark while the Royals end at 5-2.

Royals captain Wemillie Arellano led Kathy Twist's women's team Saturday at number-two singles, downing Niagara's Christine Kawalski 6-3, 7-5 and then defeating Youngstown's Allison Gatta 6-3, 6-0. Arellano teamed with Stacey Gargan to post victories in the number-one doubles matches, winning a 7-4 tiebreaker over YSU's Mary Hall and Corey Ingam. The Royals defeated Niagara 5-2 and Youngstown 6-1.

The Bulls meanwhile blanked Niagara 7-0 and defeated Youngstown 4-3. Andrew Garber led the Bulls taking the deciding match in the win over the Penguins.

MEN'S & WOMEN'S SWIMMING
The Bulls and Royals hit the waters this weekend as they open up their dual-meet seasons Saturday at Edinboro. The Royals, defending Mid-Continent Conference champions, return a strong nucleus including last season's Mid-Con Swimmer-of-the-Year Sue Bohnel, as well as All-Mid-Continent member Alexandra Barrera, the league's newcomer-of-the-year two seasons ago. Seniors Megan Connolly and Martie Duffett also return, giving Dorsi Raynolds' squad strong leadership.

Looking to rebound from last season's third-place Mid-Con finish, the Bulls return All-Mid-Con selection Mark Horgan to anchor their freestyle and Individual Medley events. Also returning for coach Budd Termin are All-Conference honorees Korry Miller, Kevin Jessop and Carl Carlson.
