ROYALS CROSS COUNTRY OPEN SEASON STRONG; BULLS SECOND
The University at Buffalo's women's cross country team, two-time defending Mid-Continent Conference champions, opened their 1996 season in impressive fashion defeating Colgate 21-37 and Syracuse 19-40 Saturday at Akron Falls Park. The UB men's team lost their season opening dual meet to Syracuse 24-32.

Senior Stacey Strothmann led the way for the Royals completing the five-kilometer (3.1 miles) course in 18:49. Colgate's Betsy Cunningham was second in 19:21 with UB's Gretchen Welch finishing third in 19:23.

On the men's side, unattached runner Patrick Nolan crossed the finish line first over the eight kilometers (five miles) in 26:18. Syracuse's Matt Norton was the top scoring runner finishing in 26:21. UB's top runner was Chris Keenan crossing the line fourth in 26:58.

The Bulls and Royals are in action again at Akron Falls Park Sept. 14 when they host the UB Invitational. Also competing will be squads from St. Bonaventure, Niagara, Erie Community College, Fanshawe College and Western Ontario. The women's race begins at 11 a.m. followed by the men's race.

ROYALS ROUT YOUNGSTOWN STATE IN WOMEN'S SOCCER
Lori Perillo and Michella Maiola each scored two first-half goals to lead the University at Buffalo Royals to a 6-0 win over the Youngstown State Penguins Saturday at RAC Field.

Perillo started the scoring early hitting the net 3:23 into the match on a breakaway following a pass from Beth Costello to give the Royals (2-1) a 1-0 lead. Maiola tallied her first of the game at the 34:47 mark after a crossing pass from Nicole Tresino. Maiola scored her second goal four and a half minutes later on assist by Perillo. Perillo closed out the first half on another breakaway goal on an assist by Julie Listrani at 43:53.

The reserves took over in the second half as Leanne Bridge and Alicia Weems tallied markers. UB outshot YSU 21-1 as goalkeepers Mary Morgan and Joanne Chillingsworth combined for the shutout. Morgan made the Royals' only save. Earlier in the week, the Royals picked up their first win, 3-1 over Niagara.

FOOTBALL
The Bulls ran into storms of two sorts Saturday night. Hurricane Fran whipped her rain and wind remnants into UB Stadium and the Connecticut Huskies flexed some muscles of their own in a 20-3 win over the Bulls.

UB was limited to -4 yards rushing-in great part due to five sacks for 51 yards in losses-by the Connecticut defense and could not convert on their scoring opportunities. The Bulls were inside the Husky 30-yard line on five occasions and managed just a 51-yard field goal by Gerald Carlson in the first quarter to open the scoring.

Connecticut used the big play on offense as quarterback Shane Stafford averaged over 25 yards per completion, including a 70-yard pass to freshman John Fitzsimmons to put UConn up for good.

UB quarterback Mark Taylor completed 21-of-37 passes for 214 yards but could not get the Bulls in the end zone. Sophomore wideout Kali Watkins led UB with eight catches for 106 yards while Jamie Gasparre had 54 yards on six catches.

The Bulls defense was again led by senior linebacker Craig Guest who made 14 stops. Senior cornerback Mike Chichester had seven tackles, one for loss; strong safety Kevin McGrriff had eight tackles and a fumble recovery.

UB now hits the road for the first time with a matchup against Colgate in Hamilton on Saturday. Kickoff is at noon; the game will be televised live on the Empire Sports Network.

VOLLEYBALL
UB split their matches over the weekend at the Toledo Invitational falling to the host Rockets in four games and defeating Wisconsin-Milwaukee in five games. The Royals now stand at 3-2.

Sophomore Amy Burda led the Royals with 11 kills, 17 digs and four service aces in the loss to Toledo. UB divided time at the setter position between senior Candi Sims and freshman Somer Deschambault garnering 16 assists each. Sims also added 10 kills and four blocks.

Against UWM, UB got 16 kills each from Sims and freshman Courtney Lugert. Sims also had 29 assists while Deschambault added 26. Lugert and Burda had 21 and 20 digs respectively while Kathy Brinkworth added nine blocks and 18 digs.

Coach Bob Maxwell's crew faces Niagara Sept. 11 before traveling to Ohio for the Golden Flash Classic at Kent State. The Royals will meet Kent State, Indiana State, Coastal Carolina and Eastern Kentucky during the weekend tournament.

MEN'S SOCCER
The Bulls dropped to 0-3 following a 2-1 loss at Pittsburgh on Sept. 4. Freshman Jason Ballock scored UB's lone goal on an assist from Jeff Rauber. The Bulls were in action at Niagara Monday, Sept. 9 and hit the road for a match at Cleveland State Saturday at 7 p.m. Coach John Astudillo's team should be proven road warriors by the time they return to RAC Field for their next home match when they face Central Connecticut State on Oct. 4.

TENNIS
Inclement weather forced the season opening men's and women's tennis matches to be held indoors at the Hilton Hotel tennis courts Saturday. Coach Russ Crispell's Bulls opened their fall season with a 7-0 shutout of Robert Morris while the Royals, under first year head coach Kathy Twist, dropped a 5-2 decision to the Colonials.

Mike Minter led the way for the Bulls at number one singles, disposing of Chris O'Brien in straight sets 6-2, 6-1. Five of the Bulls' six singles players won their matches in straight sets. The Bulls got doubles wins from Minter and Mike Proulx at number one and Orrin Pridgen and Andrew Garber at number three.

The Bulls travel to Duquesne for a match Sunday. Both squads are at home to host St. Bonaventure Sept. 17 at 1:30 p.m.
