Electronic Highways:
Beyond Florence Nightingale

Nursing is a diverse field and nowhere is that more evident than on the World Wide Web. Nursing Sites on the World Wide Web http://wings.buffalo.edu/libraries/units/hsl/internet/nsgsites.html was created by librarians in the Health Sciences Library as a resource for students, faculty and clinicians. This site is designed so even first time users of the Web will find easy access to medical and health-related information.

Web sites are grouped by categories with directories and meta-directories (list of lists) included under "Premier Nursing Locations." The Hardin Meta Directory of Internet Health Sources (Hardin MD), one of the top medical meta-directories, is found here, as are Emory University's MedWeb-Nursing and Yahoo!.

"Specialty Sites" include links more clinical in nature and divided into subject areas. Resources can be found on cancer, consumer health, death and dying, midwifery/pregnancy/birth, nurse practitioners, and women's health resources.

Researchers will benefit from a listing of U.S. federal agencies in the "Government Resources" section. The Department of Health and Human Services Home Page contains links to a variety of health care administration sites including the Food and Drug Administration and the Centers for Disease Control. "Grant Information" lists other valuable resources for researchers and educators. Try Emory University's MedWeb-Grants and Funding directory site for links to guides, documents and e-journals focusing on health sciences funding.

Users will find connections to "College and University Schools of Nursing," "Professional Nursing Associations," and "Special Mention" Web pages that are unique in scope. For more independent Web surfing, click on any of the tools listed in "Search Engines."
