BULLS SWIMMERS POST TOP GPA IN NATION

The University at Buffalo men's swimming team posted the top grade point average in the country for the second time in three years it was announced last week by the College Swimming Coaches Association of America (CSCAA).

The Bulls, coached by Budd Termin, posted an overall grade point average of 3.36 in the Fall of 1995 to top second-place Saint Louis University (3.34) and third-place Dartmouth (3.18). The UB men also topped the nation in the Spring 1993 semester with a 3.11 GPA under Termin, who has been the coach at Buffalo since 1987.

The team's success in the classroom has mirrored its work in the pool. Since upgrading to the Division I level five years ago, the Bulls have won four conference championships, had four Swimmers of the Year and Termin has been honored as Coach of the Year by the East Coast Conference, the Eastern Collegiate Athletic Conference and the Mid-Continent Conference.

UB saw a string of six straight conference championships-one of the longest in the nation in any sport-snapped this season when they finished third in the Mid-Continent. The Bulls also were 10th in the nation in 1994 in grade point average in figures released by the CSCAA.

"Since moving to Division I in 1991, I have been lucky to coach some of the most dedicated student-athletes in the country," said Termin. "What they have accomplished not only in the pool but in the classroom is a testament to their tremendous work ethic and speaks well for the entire university. I'm very proud to have had two groups of student-athletes be honored by the CSCAA as the top GPA team in the nation."

Members of the '95-96 Bulls swim team are: Rob Auer (Buffalo, NY), Carl Carlson (Jamestown, NY); Dustin Ceratt (Wolcott, NY), Daniel Cotter (Buffalo, NY), Mark Horgan (Orchard Park, NY), Kevin Jessop (Newark, DE), Joseph Kanefsky (Williamsville, NY), Korry Miller (Hamburg, NY), Justin Monin (Tonawanda, NY), Josh Pieczonka (Virginia Beach, VA), Karim Rozadowski (Great Neck, NY), Ian Salsberg (Delmar, NY), Steve Smith (Fairport, NY), Bill Snyder (North Tonawanda, NY) and Rich Wozniak (Grand Island, NY).

TRACK & FIELD

The Bulls and Royals traveled to Williamsburg, Va., for the annual Colonial Relays over the weekend, setting three records along the way.

For the second consecutive week, Thom Kaye set a Bulls record in the long jump. The junior extended his record six inches with a jump of 23-5 1/4 to finish in fifth place. Kaye finished 12th at the Raleigh Relays the previous week with a long jump of 22-11 1/4.

The Bulls also set a school record in the sprint medley finishing seventh in the event. Terrance Parker, Victor Archibald, Kris Winkler and Geoff Warlock set the mark in a time of 3:31.12.

The Royals were led by Shelley Hamilton's second-place finish in the high jump in a school-record 5-9 1/2. Hamilton, a freshman from Lockport, broke her own record of 5-6 that she had set earlier this season at the Wake Forest Invitational.

Also for the Royals, Lisa Kragbe finished third in the 100 meter hurdles in 15.2 and Stacey Strothmann took sixth in the 5,000 meters in 17:50.

The squads are back in action this weekend when they travel to the Miami of Ohio Invitational.
