Pataki appoints Castellani to UB Council

LAWRENCE P. CASTELLANI, president and chief executive officer of Tops Markets, Inc., has been appointed a member of the University at Buffalo Council, the university's local governing council, by Gov. George E. Pataki.

Castellani is chair of the Board of Trustees of the University at Buffalo Foundation, Inc., with which he has been affiliated since 1986. He has been chair of the board of trustees since 1993.

His appointment as a member of the UB Council expires on June 30, 2002.

"This is an outstanding appointment," said Philip B. Wels, chair of the council. "Mr. Castellani has a great deal to offer the council and its workings with the university.

"We are delighted and honored to have him as a member," added Wels.

Castellani joined Tops Friendly Markets as a stock clerk in 1962. After holding several managerial positions throughout the company, he was appointed director of operations in 1975. In 1991, he was named president and CEO of Tops Markets, Inc.
