Electronic Highways: Authors Online

Although surfing the World-Wide Web sometimes diverts our attention away from the books and authors we love, there is much on the Web to satisfy the "book worm" in us all. For example, the web fanatics at Yahoo have pulled together Internet sites of interest to print fanatics. Its "Books" homepage pulls together electronic texts, bookstores, and publisher catalogs. The Publishers Weekly bestseller lists reside here as well as listings of author book signing tours.

The "crown jewel" of Yahoo's "Books" page, however, is the listing under "Authors." Over 100 literary authors are listed from Shakespeare to Tom Robbins and from Jane Austen to Joyce Carol Oates. Select the Samuel Clemens entry and you find online versions of his short stories, essays, and novels, famous Mark Twain quotes, syllabi and resources for teachers, a "Twain Tour" of Hannibal, Missouri and a link to TWAIN-L, the electronic discussion group devoted to Twain's life and writings.

Anne Rice's web page includes copies of her newsletter to fans entitled "Commotion Strange" and complete transcripts of recent interviews. J.R.R. Tolkien's homepage contains a "Tolkien Timeline," a "Tolkien Language List" which has "resources for Tolkien linguists," and "Middle-Earth and the Movies" which includes discussion of past and future cinematic endeavors relating to Tolkien.

To search the Yahoo "Books" site in its text only version, type lynx at your campus E-mail system prompt and then type the URL http://www.yahoo.com/Entertainment/Books/ at the "Go" command. Those fortunate enough to have access to a graphical browser such as Netscape will use the same URL.
