  • Flags at half-mast Thursday, Friday

Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo has directed that flags on state government buildings—including those at UB—be flown at half-mast on July 7 and July 8 in honor of two New York state soldiers killed in Afghanistan.

Marine Corps Cpl. Kyle R. Schneider of Phoenix, N.Y., was killed on June 30 while conducting combat operations in Helmand province. He was assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 8th Marine Regiment of the 2nd Marine Division of the II Marine Expeditionary Force based at Camp Lejeune, N.C.

Pfc. James A. Waters died on July 1 of wounds sustained when his unit was attacked by an improvised explosive device in Kandahar province. He was assigned to the 1st Battalion of the 32nd Infantry Regiment, 3rd Brigade Combat Team of the 10th Mountain Division at Fort Drum. Waters was from Cloverdale, Ind.

Cuomo has ordered that flags on all state buildings be lowered to half-mast in honor of and tribute to New York service members who are killed in action or die in a combat zone.
