Winter: Had enough yet?

  • It seemed like winter started extra early this year, with our storm on Dec. 1. And the cold and ice have been constant since then—or it feels like it, anyway. It is not the best time to recuperate from arthroscopic knee surgery, but I am doing my best and walking very carefully!

  • Have I had enough winter yet? This morning on the way to work, I was listening to WBFO, to get NPR news. They reported it was 20 degrees in some city in Alaska, and -5 degrees here in Buffalo. Yes, I’ve had enough!

  • Since I am an avid skier, I do like winter. However, with that said, I do hate driving on ice-covered roads to get there and all of the other hassles of living through winter when I am not skiing.

  • That’s like asking someone addicted to chocolate, “so what is it like to work at the Hershey’s Chocolate Factory?” I absolutely LOVE snow! Keep it coming. It is the best time to go camping; no mosquitoes or bugs, food stays fresh and safe, not to mention the variety of ways to travel: snowshoes, cross-country skis, even dog sleds (not that we have any here at UB. However, I know of a few places nearby where one could go dog-sledding!). You could ask my backpacking classes what it was like to build our quinzee huts (snowcaves) the first day of class—even the young man from Singapore had a great time!

  • Being a native Buffalonian, I have learned to play little mind “tricks” to get through the winter season. For instance, I will not wear a coat until Nov. 1—that seems to shorten the winter season for me. Also, after the winter solstice (day with the shortest amount of daylight) I am acutely aware of how the daylight starts to stretch. I didn’t need to turn on my living room lights until 5:20 p.m. last night. That is progress. My last mind game is the Dairy Queen near my house opens mid-February, so then I have ice cream to get me through those last few weeks of winter.
