UB Wellfest, the university’s 11th annual wellness fair for faculty and staff, will be held from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. April 9 in Alumni Arena, North Campus.

The event, formerly known as Wellness Awareness Day, will be free of charge and open to all members of the UB community. It is sponsored by the Wellness and Work/Life Balance unit in University Human Resources, with assistance from the Professional Staff Senate, and routinely attracts 1,000 to 2,000 faculty, staff and graduate students. Release time to attend is available with approval from a supervisor.

The fair will focus on the health and wellness of employees and feature free health screenings, free food samplings, advice from healthy living experts and nutrition experts, fitness demonstrations and many raffles and prizes for participants. New to the event this year will be a fresh farmer’s market.

Attendees also can take part in on-site UB FIT testing. Tests will include blood pressure and heart rate, percent body-fat determination, height and weight measurement, grip strength and flexibility, and submaximal aerobic-capacity test. Call 645-2286 between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m. weekdays to make an appointment for April 9.

Wellness and Work/Life Balance this year is working with Harmony Expositions, the leading worksite health-and-wellness company in Western New York, to coordinate UB Wellfest, says Jennifer Bowen, assistant vice president for human resources. The partnership with Harmony Expositions, which has produced more than 120 worksite wellness expositions for some of the area’s largest and most progressive employers, has dramatically reduced the cost of putting on the fair—a key concern in the current economic climate, Bowen notes.

“Although we have partnered with an outside health-and-wellness specialist to put on this year’s event, UB Wellfest will stay true to the well-established tradition created by the PSS (which founded the event in 1999), and will continue to highlight the many health-and-wellness-related programs and departments at UB, along with a variety of health-and-wellness leaders in the Western New York community,” she says.

“UB is committed to continuing this valuable and worthwhile event for employees. UB Wellfest is a great opportunity for faculty and staff to learn more about healthy living and health-and-wellness programs and services on and off campus.”
