Gary Day, associate professor emeritus in the School of Architecture and Planning, died Sept. 6 after a long illness. He was 65.

A member of the UB faculty since 1983, Day served as associate chair of the Department of Architecture during the 1980s, and developed and managed the department’s various study abroad programs. He served as senior year studio coordinator from 1992-98, during which time his students received design awards from the American Collegiate Schools of Architecture, the American Institute of Architecture Students, and the Lloyd Warren Fellowship.

Day was a guest faculty member at Arkitektskolen I Aarhus, Denmark in 1988-89 and served as a faculty member for many years for the UB architecture school’s “Sustainable Futures” study abroad program in Monteverde, Costa Rica. His research focused on the relationship of architecture and the environment —green architecture long before the term became popular.

He received the Mentor of the Year Award from the Buffalo/Western New York Chapter of the American Institute of Architects, which is given annually to an individual who has inspired architectural students, interns or architects with professional guidance and wisdom.

He retired from UB due to health reasons in November 2005. That year, students created the Gary Day Service Award in his honor, a tribute to his never-ending support for students in their aspiration to become architects.
