Adding to a productive work environment

UB recently was named a “Best Places to Work in Western New York 2008” finalist by Buffalo Business First. While this ranking was based on specific categories like compensation and benefits, career development, research and scholarship opportunities, there are plenty of programs offered to faculty and staff that contribute to the relaxed, culturally diverse and productive work environment at UB.

Faculty and staff can improve their professional skills and well-being through the many employee-development opportunities offered by University Human Resources. Workshops cover how to reduce stress, both in your personal and professional life; how to become a better communicator; and how to deliver unbelievable presentations, as well as many software and computer productivity training. Classes can be customized to meet specific departmental needs.

Pedal your way to fitness by riding a Buffalo Blue Bike to work. Riding a bike gives you a chance to take in beautiful scenery and stay fit, while also saving you money. This community bicycle-lending program costs less than a tank of gas or a month's pass for transit. You can borrow the bikes for a couple of hours or up to two days. The Wellness and Work/Life Balance unit in University HR offers additional programs that support a healthy work environment, such the Start Walking Program and the New York State Smokers Quitline.

You don’t have to go far to find ways to enhance your cultural experience. UB Reads is designed to give the UB community—faculty, staff and students—a chance to explore and discuss topics of global impact through a shared reading experience. A new book is chosen each year that reflects topics and issues of global importance. “The Kite Runner” by Khaled Hossein is this year’s pick, and the author will visit UB Oct. 16 as part of UB’s Distinguished Speakers Series.

In addition, the Center for the Arts offers numerous educational and cultural opportunities through university performances, state and regional events, and national and international touring productions and exhibits. For a list of featured performances and events, click here
