Lockwood Memorial Library and the Lockwood Cybrary on the North Campus are now open 24 hours a day, seven days a week to accommodate the campus community affected by renovations to Oscar A. Silverman Library in Capen Hall.

The hours will remain in effect through the end of the spring 2015 semester. The third floor of Silverman is closed during the renovations and will reopen in late 2015. Check libraries hours for holiday exceptions and changes.

Silverman Library is open:

  • Monday through Thursday: 8 a.m. to midnight.
  • Friday: 8 a.m. to 9 p.m.
  • Saturday: 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
  • Sunday: noon to midnight.

The renovations to Silverman Library are part of the Heart of the Campus (HOTC), a UB 2020 initiative that aims to create a new “learning landscape” along the academic spine by spreading study spaces and computer labs beyond the lecture halls.

“The libraries are a part of the Heart of the Campus,” says Dean Hendrix, assistant director for University Libraries. “The renovations are all about enhancing the student learning experience by offering spaces better designed for comfort, collaboration and contemplative study.”

Silverman Library is undergoing a major redesign. When reopened, students, faculty and staff will find a Grand Reading Room enclosed in glass, an updated cybrary, a state-of-the-art classroom and redesigned social meeting spaces. New furniture, fixtures and carpeting will be installed, and the space will get a fresh coat of paint.

HOTC also includes plans to create a “one-stop student experience” on the ground floor of Capen that will consolidate services students most frequently use. Offices housed in this area would include the Student Response Center, Student Accounts, Registrar, Campus Living, Campus Dining & Shops, Parking and Transportation, Student Life, Conferences and Events, Student Wellness, New Student Programs and International Admissions.
