UB’s fifth annual Sustainable Living Fair will take place on Sept. 18 with a mission to help members of the UB community live a greener lifestyle.

Sponsored by the Professional Staff Senate (PSS), Campus Dining & Shops and the Office of Sustainability, the fair will be held from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the Student Union, North Campus.

It will feature demonstrations, door prizes and more than 40 local and national business and nonprofit organizations offering information about maintaining a sustainable home and reducing one’s environmental footprint.

The number of vendors has doubled from last year’s fair “to offer a wider range of vendors, organizations and groups to help UB faculty, staff and students learn about sustainability at home and at work,” notes Jim Simon, sustainability engagement coordinator with the Office of Sustainability and co-chair of the event with Janiece Jankowski, circulation manager for the Arts & Sciences Libraries.

Vendors include Buffalo CarShare, Buffalo ReUse, GrowWNY, the Lexington Cooperative Market, Massachusetts Avenue Project, NFTA-Metro and Sustainable Earth Solutions. Among the UB organizations that will be represented are Parking & Transportation Services, Student Association Environmental Network, Wellness Education Services and the UB Veg Club.

Check the PSS website for the full list of vendors.

In conjunction with the fair, Campus Dining & Shops again will host the Pride of New York Showcase featuring organic and local produce, dairy products and fresh baked goods from Western New York farms, fields and kitchens. The showcase, being held from 10:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. on the Special Events Field between Clemens Hall and The Commons, will spotlight many vendors that partner with UB. In the event of inclement weather, the showcase will move to 145 Student Union.

“As sustainability at UB becomes an even larger part of our campus culture, the Sustainable Living Fair provides a key venue for learning and sharing sustainability practices that make sense for all of us—whether at home, work or school,” says Simon. “The Sustainability Committee of the PSS is a great way to get involved, and in the future help plan more events like the Sustainable Living Fair.”
