The acclaimed Limón Dance Company is at UB this week for an extended residency during which the company will take part in the Center for the Arts’ Arts in Healthcare Initiative and perform a public concert.

Four company dancers, along with choreographer-in-residence Roxane D’Orleans-Juste, are working with patients at Roswell Park Cancer Institute and Women & Children’s Hospital of Buffalo. At the end of the week they will return to New York City to further develop choreographic ideas generated by patient interactions.

The full company will be at UB March 31 through April 4, leading master classes for UB dance majors and delivering lectures/demonstrations in the Roswell Park Atrium, as well as at Buffalo Public School 33, Tapestry Charter High School and Buffalo Academy of Visual & Performing Arts.

The residency will conclude with a public performance at 8 p.m. April 4 in the Center for the Arts. Members of the company will give a pre-performance talk at 7:15 p.m. The performance is part of the M&T Bank Dance Series.

Tickets are $31.50 for general admission and $13.50 for students from any school, and are available at the CFA box office and at tickets.com.

The residency is supported by an award from the National Endowment for the Arts and a grant from Target.

The Limón Dance Company has been at the vanguard of American modern dance since 1946. The company is the living legacy of dance theater developed by José Limón and his mentors Doris Humphrey and Charles Weidman, whose innovative works revolutionized American dance.

Now in its 68th year, the company is renowned for its technical mastery and dramatic expression, and demonstrates both the timelessness of José Limón’s works and the humanistic vision that guides the choices of the pieces in its repertory.

Since 1997, the Center for the Arts has conducted more than a dozen professional dance outreach projects to provide arts education to more than 24,000 local school children — primarily in the city of Buffalo. These students have the opportunity to experience live professional dance performances in their schools, free of charge, by some of the world’s finest companies.

UB dance majors also benefit from the master classes taught by members of these professional dance companies.
